New Year's resolutions

The beginning of the New Year is a popular time to make promises about positive things you want to do during the year ahead. Often they relate to improving our lifestyle. We call these promises ‘New Year’s resolutions’. Most people start their resolutions from 1st January.

These are some structures used to express resolutions

- Will + infinitive

- Be going to + infinitive (I am going to…)

- I want to + infinitive

- I would like to + infinitive

- My New Year’s resolution is… or  My New Year’s resolutions are… + infinitive

Task 1: Read the examples of New Year´s resolutions:

I will do my homework and work hard at school.

I will go to bed early.

I will drink water and less fizzy drinks.

I'll be nice to other people.

I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car.

I will clean my room once a week.

I will help my parents, teachers and respect them.

I will only watch television and play video games for one or two hours a day.

I will read more books.

I will learn how to speak French.

Task 2: My Resolutions

Here are some common New Year’s resolutions (personal plans for the coming year). Circle and say the resolutions you would like to make.

 I will………….

  • Exercise: do more / join a gym / take up a sport
  • Health: get in shape / go on a diet / eat less chocolate / give up junk food
  • Hobbies: start a new hobby / join a club/ learn a new skill (for example, how to cook, paint, play an instrument)
  • Friends: make new friends / write to friends more / be nicer to friends / spend more time or less time with friends
  • Studies: study more / do more homework / listen more in class / get books from the library / read more
  • Responsibilities: help my wife do the shopping /save more money / tidy my room /spend responsibly

Now write your own resolutions:
